Limay Polytechnic College (LPC) advances a study that seeks to investigate the proposition that the banana plant may be considered a β€œtree of generations” through the comprehensive utilization of its components from roots to fruits.

The research is contextualized within the Province of Bataan, where banana plants are abundant yet often underutilized, particularly after fruit harvesting, leading to significant biomass waste.

While conventional knowledge highlights the utility of banana leaves and fruits, this study expands the scope by examining the potential applications of all plant parts, including the heart, flower, trunk, leaf stalk, shoots, and roots.

Anchored within the Department of Business, specifically the Marketing Program, the research adopts an interdisciplinary approach integrating business and science disciplines rolled into one subject of inquiry.

The research team is currently examining the plant’s scientific and nutritional value, cultural significance, environmental impact, and economic potential to substantiate this theory.

The investigation aims to identify, develop, and evaluate at least one hundred (100) viable uses and derivative products from the banana plant. These outputs are intended to demonstrate a zero-waste framework and contribute to sustainable resource diversion and utilization. Analytical methods include product development, value assessment, and market feasibility studies.

Findings and outputs will be presented through an exhibit designed to facilitate academic discourse, product pitching, market analysis, and public awareness. Furthermore, selected products will be integrated into LPC’s business incubation initiatives.

An additional output of the study is the development of a coffee table book entitled The Tree of Generations, to be published in collaboration with the Bataan Provincial Tourism Council, Limay Municipal Tourism Council, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), and the Department of Agriculture (DA).

The research is led by Dr. John Levy Rueda, with Ms. Abegail Valmonte, and Mr. Danreve Apostol, all Marketing practitioners. #
